Fantasy Football: Analyzing The Green Bay Packers Receivers
The Green Bay Packers already had a bunch of wide receivers on the roster heading into the 2025 NFL Draft. Once it was time to make their selections, the Packers front office decided that what they had wasn’t enough. The Packers ended the draft by adding two more wide receivers to the mix with first-round pick Matthew Golden out of Texas and third-round pick Savion Williams out of TCU. Keep in mind, the Packers had Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks for Jordan Love to throw to.
With six wide receivers on the roster, how are fantasy managers expected to navigate the team’s roster to find that “fantasy gold”? I have my own theory to hitting the mark so let me walk you guys through it.
One thing to note is that the Packers wanted to add a more dominant wide receiver to give quarterback Jordan Love a consistent and reliable target. During the 2024 season, the Packers opted to spread the ball around to their receivers, with no one pass catcher eclipsing 100 targets. Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, and Jayden Reed were the only receivers to see north of 50+ targets as Christian Watson, once again, missed time due to injury. Out of the top three options, Reed was the best receiving choice, finishing the season by leading all Packers wideouts with a 73% catch rate.
Reed finished second in targets among the Packers wide receivers but led the team in receiving touchdowns with six. As it stands, Jayden Reed looks to be the best weapon on the Packers roster before the draft. Reed is thinking the same thing as is agent, Drew Rosenahus met with Packers GM Brian Guteksunst in regards to his status as the teams’ “top receiver”. As stated already, Reed was the best receiver for the Packers during the 2024 season. But the Packers needed to make upgrades to gain more consistency out of the group.
Jayden Reed has a chance to lead the charge to start the 2025 season but first-round pick Matthew Golden will also have his opportunities to prove himself as the top receiver for the Packers too. Golden had one of the fastest 40 times during the NFL combine at 4.29, ranking second among rookie wide receivers. Golden’s ability to play in all three receiver positions on the field in harmony with his first round draft stock will get him on the field quicker. Granted, that Golden can show harmony with Jordan Love during training camp.
All of this doesn’t mean that Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks are chopped liver. But it wouldn’t be a surprise to see both receivers fall down the depth chart with the rise of Matthew Golden and Jayden Reed being the top two options. Then there’s Savion Williams to consider.
Savion Williams was selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, putting him in striking distance to have an important role on the team when you consider his draft stock. Williams comes in at 6’4″, 212 lbs, and a 40 time of 4.48, per NFL.com, brings some size back to the Packers wide receiver corp. This also spells trouble for the similar sized but often injured wide receiver Christian Watson. For Williams, his versatility as a potential “gadget” weapon at his size is another layer to the Packers offense.
While it’s been noted that one of Williams weaknesses is his route running, often stated as being “raw” in that department, the amount of potential he has is clear. Conversely, one of Williams noted strength’s is his ability to run after the catch and making big plays from short catches underneath. If Williams can be more consistent with his route running and hands, the wide receiver spot is his for the taking.
Last season, based on the Packers wide receiver snap counts, the overall top three options were Romeo Doubs at nearly 51 snaps per game, Jayden Reed at 40.3 snaps per game, and Christian Watson at 37 snaps per game. While Watson did miss just two games in 2024, his production was all over the place and he wasn’t reliable for fantasy managers or the Packers offense. Watson did manage six games of 50 receiving yards or better but on a minimal target share, averaging just 3.5 targets per game.

Dontayvion Wicks was only slightly better than Christian Watson in terms of targets per game, seeing just one more target per game at 4.5. Wicks was considered the Packers deep threat but was ranked the lowest among the Packers wide receivers in True Catch Rate at 79.6%.
The Packers are a team who’s wide receiver corps is in flux heading towards training camp but if I had to put my money on someone to target in fantasy football, it would be Matthew Golden on the cheaper end. Golden has an opportunity to cement himself as a dynamic threat in the Packers offense starving for a true number one wide receiver. While Jayden Reed has made his case as to being one of the Packers “top options”, that doesn’t mean he’ll be THE top option.
According to Fantasydata’s ADP chart, both Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden are sitting around the same level, as the WR43 and WR44 respectively. Both should be rostered this season as I expect they will be the top two options for the Packers with Savion Williams being the WR3 for the team if he can overtake Romeo Doubs. For season long fantasy, Golden’s’ use all over the field plus being a deep threat with his speed opens the door for a high volume of snaps and chunk plays to be collected for fantasy managers to play on.
Golden is a stronger WR3 on fantasy rosters with upside to break into mid-wide receiver two levels if he starts to get a consistent target share over the other Packers wide receivers. Having Matthew Golden on rookie watch is a must during training camp. The faster he connects with Jordan Love and proves himself in the Packers offense this offseason, the faster he’ll be to being a fantasy asset among the 2025 rookie class once the regular season rolls around.
