The Phinest Waiver Wire Adds – Week 2

Waiver Wire Adds For Week 2

The start of the NFL was both exciting and tragic. We saw some great games and some players that really stepped out front despite being on the field for the very first time in their career. We also had the misfortune of seeing some vets fall out of games because of injuries. That’s just how it goes with fantasy football and sometimes your left holding the bag, having to make adjustments to your team. Other times it might be more prudent to grab a player because of a need for depth. Whatever the case, fantasy managers should be looking to add as much talent to their team, if needed, each week.

But Week 2 kicks off with the waiver wire so make sure you have your claims on the books just in case you need to make a move or two. Or if you have the top waiver wire add, you could just take the best claim for the week and hurt someone else’s team. It’s totally up to you. But here are some players that you need to target heading into Week 2.

Week 2 Waiver Targets

Puka Nacua, WR – LAR (1.9% Rostered)

I’m kicking myself in some leagues because I should’ve grabbed him up when I had the chance. Sean McVay tried to tell us that Puka Nacua was an “immediate contributor” and boy was he! Nacua saw 15 targets in his first NFL start against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, totalling 119 receiving yards on the day and finishing as a top 10 fantasy wide receiver. Cooper Kupp is expected to miss the next few games on IR and I get the feeling that even when he comes back, Nacua will still be a big part of the offense as long as he has Matthew Stafford’s trust.

Joshua Kelly, RB – LAC (0.8% Rostered)

Chargers OC Kellen Moore must’ve been taking notes all offseason on how he didn’t run the ball enough with the Dallas Cowboys because he had both Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelly rocking it on the ground against the Miami Dolphins. With a near split in Snap% (50.6 for Ekeler, 48.1 for Kelly) both backs were involved in the game with Kelly rushing for 91 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. If the Chargers continue to run the ball like this, Kelly will surely be a nice addition to fantasy managers rosters especially if they need a running back.

Gus Edwards, Justice Hill, RB – BAL (1.2% & 0.8% Rostered)

It was unfortunate to see to see Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins go down after such a good start to the game. Dobbins left the game with a torn Achilles and will miss the rest of the 2023 season. The worst part is that this latest injury could put some serious doubt into his NFL career moving foward as he’s been plagued with injuries since entering the league. With Dobbins done for the year, the tandem of Gus Edwards and Justice Hill will take over unless the Ravens add another body to the backfield. Hill was the preferred goal-line hammer in Week 1 as he punched in two touchdowns during the game. Edwards was the better back on the ground averaging four yards per attempt on eight attempts.

Kyren Williams, RB – LAR (0.4% Rostered)

It was starting to feel like Sean McVay was running his own version of “Belitricks” during the game because it felt like Kyren Williams was getting to do all the damage early on in the game. But honestly, I can’t really blame him this time around. Cam Akers ended the game with 22 carries but averaged a poor 1.3 yards per attempt. Williams was a little better, averaging 3.5 yards per attempt but he saw had two touchdowns to add to his 52 yards (on 15 carries). Another thing to consider, Williams out-snapped Akers in Week 1 53 to 28. If this goes into a committee, Williams value is going to go up.

Zay Jones, WR – JAX (27.4% Rostered)

While Calvin Ridley stole the show in his debut as a Jacksonville Jaguar, Zay Jones was not the forgotten man on the field in Week 1. Jones would actually lead the Jaguars receivers in snaps with 62 (88.6%) with Ridley finishing in second with 57 snaps. Jones went five for 51 yards on seven targets and a touchdown, finishing with 16.5 fantasy points. If you need a wide receiver and Puka Nacua has already been taken, Zay Jones isn’t a bad addition.

Jordan Love, QB – GB (13.5% Rostered)

With Aaron Rodgers tearing his Achilles in the first series of the Jets/Bills game, fantasy managers may need an option or two if Rodgers was their quarterback. Enter Jordan Love. Love’s debut against the Chicago Bears was pretty solid all around. Love finished as the QB3 for Week 1 with 23 fantasy points and that was without starting wide receiver Christian Watson. Love helped get the Packers the W over the Chicago Bears with his 245 yards and three touchdowns. Love could be a nice alternative if he’s still available in your leagues.

Roschon Johnson, RB – CHI (1.1% Rostered)

I feel like I would be wrong to not help you guys get out in front of this one but Roschon Johnson should be the back to own in the Bears backfield and at 1.1% rostered , you should be stashing him on your teams now while you can. Johnson not only led the Bears backfield in snaps in Week 1 (29 to 27 *Khalil Herbert) but Johnson outperformed Herbert as well, finishing as the RB8 as opposed to Herbert’s RB24 finish. Johnson saw seven targets (six for 35 yards) and rushed for 20 yards on five attempts and a score for 17.5 fantasy points while Herbert finished with 27 yards on nine carries and saw five targets (three for 37 receiving).
